In keeping with my paranoia about trusting other hosting services with the things I do, I've decided to migrate all of the stuff I've posted publicly here, for longevity. It probably won't be seen by as many people as on Archive of Our Own or Letterboxd or whatever, but at this point that doesn't really bother me. I would rather have a record I know I can keep up indefinitely, instead of some shambling website run by other people which may suddenly vanish one day without my knowing.
The bigger pieces here are fictional writing (at this point consisting solely of fanfics, though if I ever bother to write original work it will also go here), which have their own pages. These are unabridged from how I uploaded them to Archive of Our Own, along with the descriptions I gave them originally, listed on this page in chronological order.
I also have an unfinished rough draft for a continuation of the ancient Zelda fanfic called Eloze by Dark Link, which is not currently published. If I ever bother to finish that I will post it here, and if the original website for that story goes down I will also rehost that here (assuming the author doesn't reach out and request otherwise, somehow).
A fanfic based on the Gundam Universal Century Timeline. Published July 30th 2021, 12,389 words.
Summary: Side 15, more commonly known as New Genoa, is a monument to humanity's endurance and ingenuity which beckons from deep in the recesses of the asteroid belt. The Federation has dispatched the Eurus, pride of its fleet, on a humanitarian mission to provide aid in a time of severe crisis.
Notes: Short fic I wrote back in 2021 after watching at least the MGS 0079 compilation movies, and maybe Zeta + Double Zeta? The timeline is rough in my head. This is the first fictional writing I had done in my adult life that I bothered to keep. I haven't looked at it since I posted it on Discord and I'm sure it's pretty rough, the idea is way too on the nose. Still, figured I should put it up here regardless.
My friend Misha never got around to reviewing it. Shame on him!
A fanfic based on Stephen King's The Dark Tower series. Published November 30th 2022, 51,769 words.
Summary: Before securing the honor of carrying their father's guns, prospective gunslingers must engage in ritual combat with their own instructor to prove that they remember the face of their fathers.
Daniel Bryne has forgotten the face of his father, and is thus cast out into the world without those guns. Now he nurtures a meager existence in the northeasterly town of Deepwood, clinging to what little honor he has left.
Notes: This was written over the course of Nanowrimo in 2022. It's the first "full length" fictional story I've written, and that title--along with the time constraint of the event--makes for some glaring problems. I am specifically not fond of the motivation of the primary antagonist, how a couple of events unfold, and the writing is more amateurish compared to my more recent project Leavenworth.
That aside, I think a lot of it is okay. There's a surprising dearth of good Dark Tower fanfics, so I'm not sure where this one fits in the grand scheme. I've felt very fond of that universe for a very long time and I hope that this is a suitable addition to it.
Reading the Dark Tower series and its associated works is not necessary for this, but is of course recommended.
The original name for this work when I uploaded it to Royal Road was "A Trumpet to Shake the Heavens" and that just fucking sucks. So, upon porting it over to AO3, I decided to give it something a little less grandiose. I hope whoever reads it may enjoy it.
Short fanfic based on nostalgebraist's Almost Nowhere. Published April 20th 2024, 5,786 words.
Summary: William Coleman is a failed scientist. While waiting for the end of the world at the hands of some extra-dimensional aliens, he decides to take a walk.
Notes: Short story inspired by a dream I had while reading nostalgebraist's Almost Nowhere, an excellent if difficult story. It was quite upsetting at the time, and this telling may not be perfectly accurate in terms of fidelity to the original story or how physics actually works (forgive me, I'm a humble biologist), but I figured I would try anyway.
Title is a quotation from Georg Christoph Lichtenberg.
Fanfic inspired by Chicago, by Bavitz. Published May 17th 2024, 64,758 words.
Summary: It has been a year since the Empire of Chicago collapsed during its conquest of America. Magical girls can no longer rely on simple secrecy, and a noose is tightening on those who cannot adapt to a new era. Kansas City has done well enough to keep things running and prevent her crew from being subsumed by the swelling United States Magic Force, but an encroaching disaster from an uncontrollable neighbor threatens to end their struggle.
This fic occurs in the world of Bavitz's take on Puella Magi Madoka Magica, post-Chicago. I cannot recommend reading this without doing Chicago first, although I consciously tried pretty hard to make it possible to get the context as a standalone work.
I was inspired by that fic in a way that I haven't felt for a long time, and wanted to pay personal homage to it somehow. Many details--especially of places, objects in them and the personalities of a couple characters--are taken directly from where I've lived both in the past and now, with some minor tweaks here and there where necessary. I have included explanations at the end of each chapter of whatever pertinent stuff I can remember about my creative process. I think I'm done with that now but no promises, if I think of something relevant that I haven't included I'll just include it later.
If you're a fan of Bavitz's Madoka stuff and enjoy this at all, please check out the completed Savannah by Pigoseg, and the currently ongoing London by julirites, both of which I have enjoyed very much. Savannah in particular made me fucking angry because I liked the prose so much more than my own stuff, and it inspired the edit I needed to finally be done with writing this story. Also, if you like Fargo and/or Chicago and feel like writing your own fanfic, you really should do so. There's a lot of potential in this setting and I feel like it deserves more attention than it's gotten so far.
Immense gratitude to Bavitz and gazemaize for their patience with my insecurities and their excellent advice. I don't consider myself a creative type but I've enjoyed this exercise a lot, and I hope it's enjoyable to read as well. Thanks guys.
I also will try to write reviews, the majority of which that exist at this point being for movies (note: it should be assumed that any of these reviews will contain spoilers for the work I'm discussing). I'm essentially just copypasting my Letterboxd reviews, but going forward I'd like to write reviews for all media I consume, including video games and books. We'll see how long I keep that effort up. The reviews will be organized by medium, then alphabetically. I will not write reviews for anything I've experienced before beginning to write reviews, only once I've experienced them freshly going forward.
